M74 Extension

The extension of the M74 in Glasgow opened on 28th June 2011. This extensive work on an elevated section joins the previous end of the M74 at Fullarton Road to link up with the M8 south of the Kingston Bridge at Tradeston. It provides a welcome alternative to the city section of the M8 which is so often a bottleneck and will ease congestion on the Kingston Bridge. This fulfils original objectives for the Motorway plans for Glasgow from 1965 and removes the anomaly of the prepared junctions at either end that went nowhere. The section was due to open to the public at 7 pm but was delayed by about half an hour when, with police escort, the first vehicles were allowed through on the Westbound carriageway. The Eastbound carriageway (shown) was opened at 8 pm.
